Which city hosts Nigeria’s main Independence Day celebrations at Eagle Square?

The story behind the answer

Abuja hosts Nigeria’s main Independence Day celebrations at Eagle Square.

Abuja became Nigeria’s capital in 1991, replacing Lagos. Its central location and purpose-built government district made it the principal setting for major national ceremonies. Eagle Square, near key federal institutions, is used for parades, speeches and formal public events, including Independence Day observances.

Nigeria celebrates independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October. National-day events may include military and civilian parades, cultural performances, presidential remarks and displays involving the armed forces. The ceremonies provide a national platform for a country made up of many regions, languages and cultural communities.

Lagos remains Nigeria’s largest city and an important center for its own public celebrations, which can cause confusion about the national venue. However, the federal government’s principal Independence Day ceremony is associated with Abuja and Eagle Square.
