Windhoek hosts Namibia’s central Independence Day celebrations at Independence Stadium.
Namibia celebrates Independence Day on 21 March, commemorating its independence from South Africa in 1990. Windhoek, the national capital, is the usual focal point for the country’s principal ceremonies, speeches, parades, and cultural events. Independence Stadium is one of the capital’s major public venues for large national gatherings.
The independence settlement followed a long period of international pressure and armed conflict involving South African rule and the South West Africa People’s Organisation, commonly known as SWAPO. Sam Nujoma became Namibia’s first president after independence.
Namibia’s Independence Day should not be confused with Heroes’ Day, observed on 26 August. Heroes’ Day honors people who died or suffered in the struggle for national liberation, whereas Independence Day marks the achievement of sovereign statehood.
