Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a major New Year's celebration centered on the city, especially the area around Princes Street and the Old Town. The modern festival developed into an internationally known event during the late twentieth century. Its scale reflects Scotland's wider Hogmanay traditions, but the Edinburgh program is a contemporary, organized city festival rather than a single ancient ceremony preserved unchanged.
Edinburgh's event is sometimes conflated with Glasgow's New Year celebrations or with Burns Night. Burns Night takes place on January 25 and features suppers, poetry and songs honoring Robert Burns. Hogmanay, by contrast, marks the end of December and the start of January, with local customs such as first-footing remaining part of the broader Scottish tradition.
