Which city hosted the Wright brothers’ first public airplane demonstration in Europe?

The story behind the answer

Le Mans hosted the Wright brothers’ first public airplane demonstration in Europe.

Wilbur Wright traveled to France in 1908 after European skepticism and disputes over the brothers’ claims had grown. At the Hunaudières racecourse near Le Mans, he began a series of demonstrations that displayed the Flyer’s controlled turns, circles, and reliable landings.

The flights impressed European observers because Wilbur could maneuver repeatedly and remain in the air for extended periods. French aviators and officials soon recognized that the Wright system offered more than a brief straight-line hop. The demonstrations helped establish the brothers’ international reputation.

Le Mans is sometimes confused with later locations such as Auvours and Pau, where Wilbur also flew. His French campaign moved among several sites, but Le Mans was the setting for the first public European demonstration in this sequence.
