Which city hosted the Synod of Frankfurt in 794?
Answer
Frankfurt
Answer
Frankfurt
The Synod of Frankfurt in 794 was held in Frankfurt, then known as Franconofurd, in the Frankish kingdom.
Charlemagne convened the meeting in June 794, bringing together bishops and other churchmen from Gaul, Germany, Italy, and Provence. Two representatives of Pope Hadrian I also attended. The gathering addressed major religious and political issues, including the Frankish response to the Second Council of Nicaea and disputes involving Adoptionism.
The synod is sometimes called the Council of Frankfurt or the Council of Frankfort. It should not be confused with church councils held at Mainz, Aachen, or Rome. Frankfurt was already an important royal settlement, and its position along the Main River made it a practical meeting place for representatives from across Charlemagne’s territories.
The synod also issued decisions connected with Charlemagne’s broader program of religious and administrative standardization. Its location is therefore not merely a naming detail: Frankfurt became associated with one of the most important assemblies of Charlemagne’s reign.
