Which city hosted the September 1945 ceremony surrendering Japanese forces in China?

The story behind the answer

Nanjing hosted the September 1945 ceremony surrendering Japanese forces in China.

The ceremony took place on 9 September 1945 at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing, then the capital of the Republic of China. It followed the broader surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri by one week.

General Yasuji Okamura signed the document for the Japanese forces in China. General He Yingqin accepted the surrender for the Allied side as commander of the Chinese Nationalist forces, with British Major-General Eric Hayes also present.

Nanjing is distinct from Tokyo Bay, where Japan’s national surrender instrument was signed on 2 September. It is also distinct from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two Japanese cities destroyed by atomic bombs in August. The Nanjing ceremony dealt specifically with Japanese forces in the China theater.
