Des Moines hosted the opening announcement for America250 on July 3, 2025.
The announcement helped launch the public phase of the nationwide semiquincentennial celebrations one year before the central anniversary date. Des Moines is the capital of Iowa and is also known for hosting the Iowa State Fair, one of the prominent venues connected with planned America250 activities.
The city should not be confused with Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted and where several anniversary-related historical sites are located. Washington, D.C., is the national capital and a major site for commemorative events, but it was not the city named for this opening announcement.
America250 celebrations were planned as a multi-year effort rather than a single ceremony. Events included educational programs, service initiatives, storytelling projects, commemorative coins, cultural performances, and nationwide local activities leading to July 4, 2026.
