Which city hosted the first Continental Congress in 1774?

The story behind the answer

Philadelphia hosted the first Continental Congress in 1774.

Delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia from September 5 to October 26, 1774. Georgia did not send delegates. The gathering responded to the Coercive Acts, which Britain had imposed after the Boston Tea Party, and sought a coordinated colonial response.

The First Continental Congress adopted the Continental Association, which organized a boycott of British goods. It also issued a petition to King George III and declared colonial rights. Although the delegates did not yet call for independence, their cooperation created a political framework that became increasingly important after fighting began in 1775.

Philadelphia remained central to the revolutionary movement. The Second Continental Congress met there, the Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention later met there in 1787. Carpenters’ Hall and Independence Hall are separate buildings, despite both being connected with the founding era.
