Which city hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first held in South America?

The story behind the answer

Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first Olympic Games held in South America.

The Games took place from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Events were staged across several areas of the city, including Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã. The opening ceremony was held at Maracanã Stadium, while the Olympic cauldron was lit by former Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima.

Rio 2016 featured more than 11,000 athletes from over 200 national Olympic committees. Golf returned to the Olympic program after a 112-year absence, and rugby sevens made its Olympic debut. The United States topped the medal table, while Brazil won its highest total of Olympic medals at that time.

Rio was selected as host city in 2009 after defeating Madrid, Tokyo, and Chicago in the International Olympic Committee vote. The event was also the first Olympics held in a Portuguese-speaking country and the first staged in South America, a distinction often confused with the Pan American Games, which had previously been held there.
