Which city hosted the 2012 Summer Olympic Games?

The story behind the answer

The city that hosted the 2012 Summer Olympic Games was London.

Officially called the Games of the XXX Olympiad, London 2012 was held from July 27 to August 12, 2012. Most events took place in and around the purpose-built Olympic Park in Stratford, East London, while other competitions used established venues across the capital and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

The International Olympic Committee selected London at its session in Singapore on July 6, 2005. London won the final ballot over Paris by 54 votes to 50, after earlier rounds eliminated Moscow, New York City, and Madrid. The Games were especially notable because London became the first city to host the modern Summer Olympics three times, having previously staged them in 1908 and 1948.

A common mix-up is placing the 2012 Games in Beijing or Rio de Janeiro: Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, while Rio hosted the 2016 edition.
