Which city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games?

The story behind the answer

Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

The 2008 Olympics took place in Beijing, China, from 8 to 24 August 2008. They were officially called the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. Beijing became the first city in China to host the Summer Olympics, and the event involved athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees.

The opening ceremony was held at Beijing National Stadium, widely known as the Bird’s Nest. Aquatic events took place at the National Aquatics Center, nicknamed the Water Cube. The Games were accompanied by extensive construction and transport projects that reshaped parts of the city.

China topped the medal table by total gold medals, winning 51, while the United States won the most medals overall. The 2008 Games are sometimes confused with the 2004 Olympics in Athens or the 2012 Olympics in London. Beijing later became the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics when it hosted the Winter Games in 2022.
