Which city hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics celebrated during America’s Bicentennial year?

The story behind the answer

Montreal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics, held during the United States Bicentennial year.

The Games took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from July 17 to August 1, 1976. They were the first Summer Olympics held in Canada. Although the United States Bicentennial created interest in hosting major celebrations and sporting events, the United States did not host either the 1976 Summer or Winter Olympics.

Los Angeles had bid for the 1976 Summer Olympics but lost to Montreal. Denver was initially selected for the 1976 Winter Olympics, but Colorado voters rejected funding, and the Winter Games were moved to Innsbruck, Austria.

Montreal is sometimes confused with an American host city because the Bicentennial coincided with the Olympics and because Los Angeles later hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics. The 1976 Summer Games were Canadian, not American.
