Philadelphia hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the United States’ 100th-anniversary celebration before America250.
Officially called the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine, the fair ran from May 10 to November 10, 1876. It was held in Fairmount Park, near the city’s historic founding sites, and marked the centennial of the Declaration of Independence.
The exposition displayed industrial products, scientific inventions, art, and manufactured goods from the United States and other countries. Memorial Hall served as one of its principal buildings. The event attracted roughly 10 million visits, an extraordinary total for the period.
Philadelphia was also the location of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition, which marked 150 years, while the 1976 Bicentennial was celebrated nationwide. These earlier anniversaries help place America250 within a sequence of major U.S. commemorations.
