Berlin holds the New Year's Eve countdown at Brandenburg Gate, one of Germany's largest public celebrations.
The event takes place along the Straße des 17. Juni between Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column. Public programming has included live music, DJs, food stalls, light displays, and fireworks at midnight. Attendance and event arrangements can vary, and organizers may introduce security controls or ticketing requirements.
Brandenburg Gate is an especially symbolic location because it has stood at the center of major political changes in German history. Built between 1788 and 1791, it was modeled on the Propylaea of Athens. During the Cold War, the gate stood in the restricted area near the Berlin Wall; after German reunification, it became a national symbol of unity.
The Berlin celebration is sometimes called the “Party at the Brandenburg Gate,” but it is separate from smaller private parties and neighborhood events across the city.
