Edinburgh holds the Hogmanay street party centered on Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is a major Scottish New Year celebration featuring public events, concerts, processions, and a large street gathering in the city center. The castle provides a distinctive backdrop, while Princes Street and nearby areas form the setting for many of the best-known events.
“Hogmanay” is the Scottish term for New Year’s celebrations generally, so it is not exclusively the name of Edinburgh’s festival. Edinburgh’s organized event is one particularly famous expression of that broader tradition. Scottish New Year customs also include first-footing, in which the first person to enter a home after midnight is traditionally associated with good fortune. That custom should not be confused with the separate public street party.
