The annual Hogmanay Street Party in Scotland's best-known New Year celebration is held in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a citywide festival centered on the transition from December 31 to January 1. Its program has included the Torchlight Procession, concerts, a large street party along central avenues, and fireworks viewed against Edinburgh Castle. Event arrangements, capacity, and exact venues can change between editions.
The celebration grew into a major organized event in the late twentieth century, building on Scotland's long-standing Hogmanay traditions. Edinburgh's historic Old Town, New Town, castle, and surrounding hills provide a distinctive setting, but the city event is not the origin of every Scottish New Year's custom.
Edinburgh Hogmanay is sometimes mixed up with Glasgow's own New Year events or with Burns Night. The name Hogmanay applies to Scotland's broader New Year festival, while Edinburgh's street party is its most internationally visible urban celebration.
