Philadelphia was the city that the USA250 nonprofit sought to establish as host city for America's 250th-anniversary events.
USA250 was established in Philadelphia in 2011 to lobby for federal support for the semiquincentennial and to promote Philadelphia as a central location for anniversary observances. The city has an especially strong connection to the founding era: the Continental Congress met there, the Declaration of Independence was adopted there, and the Constitution was drafted there.
Philadelphia's historical importance does not mean every America250 event will occur there. The national observance involves all states and territories, with local programs spread across the country. The city also should not be confused with Boston, another major Revolutionary-era center, or Washington, D.C., the modern seat of the federal government.
