Answer
Citroën Traction Avant
Answer
Citroën Traction Avant
The Citroën Traction Avant became the first mass-produced front-wheel-drive car with a unitary body when it launched in 1934.
Designed under André Lefèbvre with styling by Flaminio Bertoni, the Traction Avant combined front-wheel drive, independent front suspension, and a strong unitary body structure. These features produced a low floor, good interior space, and distinctive handling for its era.
“Traction Avant” means “front-wheel drive” in French. The model was sold under several engine and body versions and remained in production until 1957, making it one of Citroën’s most influential designs.
Earlier front-wheel-drive cars existed, including the Cord L-29, but Citroën brought the layout to much larger-scale production. The later Mini also used front-wheel drive, but it was introduced in 1959.
