Which Christmas carol tells the story of a king who braves a blizzard to help a peasant?
Answer
Good King Wenceslas
Answer
Good King Wenceslas
“Good King Wenceslas” tells the story of a king who braves severe winter weather to help a poor peasant. The journey takes place on the Feast of Stephen, traditionally observed on December 26.
The carol’s central figure is based on Saint Wenceslaus I, a tenth-century duke of Bohemia. Although commonly called a king in the song, Wenceslaus was historically a duke; the title reflects his later reputation and the song’s traditional wording.
John Mason Neale wrote the English lyrics in 1853, working with music editor Thomas Helmore. They set the words to the melody of “Tempus adest floridum,” a thirteenth-century spring carol preserved in the 1582 Finnish collection Piae Cantiones.
In the narrative, the king’s page struggles against the cold, but follows Wenceslas’s footprints through the snow and is able to continue. The song is therefore not a retelling of the Nativity; it is a Victorian moral carol about charity, leadership, and practical compassion.
