Catholicism is especially associated with the quinceañera Mass tradition.
Many quinceañeras include a Catholic thanksgiving service because the custom developed in communities shaped by Spanish and Latin American Catholic culture. The service can provide a religious setting for prayers, blessings, and expressions of gratitude at the fifteenth birthday.
The association does not mean every quinceañera is Catholic or religious. The celebration is also practiced by secular families and by families from other Christian backgrounds. Some communities retain the formal clothing, court, dance, and reception while leaving out a church service.
A common mistake is treating the quinceañera as an official sacrament. It is a cultural observance, and a Mass held for it is a liturgical celebration rather than a sacrament equivalent to baptism, confirmation, or marriage.
