Mango was a flamboyant male exotic dancer and stripper whose exaggerated charm caused people of many genders and orientations to become infatuated with him. Kattan performed the character in colorful, undersized clothing, a sparkling cap, and an overtly theatrical style. His catchphrases included “You can’t have the Mango” and “If you start out using Mango, it will only lead to more Mango.”
Mango debuted on October 18, 1997, in the third episode of SNL’s 23rd season. Kattan developed the character with writer Scott Wainio for a sketch hosted by Brendan Fraser. The character drew on several inspirations, including Marlene Dietrich’s Lola Lola in the 1930 film The Blue Angel and a real performer Kattan had encountered in a strip club.
