Mars recalled chocolate products across Europe in 2016 after plastic was found in some bars.
The recall began after a consumer reported finding a piece of red plastic in a Snickers bar bought in Germany. Mars expanded the action to multiple countries and several product lines made at its plant in Veghel, the Netherlands.
The affected brands included Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, Celebrations and Mini Mix products, depending on the market. The company said the plastic may have come from a protective cover used during production. The recall was precautionary but broad because products had been distributed internationally.
This incident is often confused with allergen recalls involving chocolate. Its distinctive issue was possible physical contamination by plastic, not undeclared nuts, milk or another ingredient.
