Which chip designer became the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization after Apple and Microsoft?

The story behind the answer

Nvidia became the third company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization, after Apple and Microsoft.

Nvidia crossed $3 trillion in June 2024 as investors rushed to value its graphics processors and data-center systems used for artificial-intelligence computing. Its share price had risen dramatically because major technology companies were spending heavily on AI infrastructure.

Nvidia began as a graphics-chip company associated with computer games, but its CUDA software ecosystem helped make its processors useful for machine-learning workloads. The company’s data-center business consequently became a central part of the AI boom.

Nvidia’s 10-for-one stock split took effect in June 2024. A split lowers the price of each individual share while proportionally increasing the number of shares, so it does not by itself create market value. Market capitalization still depends on the adjusted share price multiplied by the new share count.
