Which Chinese zodiac animal is associated with the year 2024?

The story behind the answer

The Chinese zodiac associates the year 2024 with the Dragon.

More specifically, 2024 began a Wood Dragon year in the traditional sexagenary cycle. Lunar New Year fell on February 10, 2024, so people born before that date generally belong to the previous Rabbit year under the commonly used lunar-year convention. This date boundary is an important source of confusion.

The Chinese zodiac combines a 12-animal cycle with a cycle of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The animal and element pairing changes each year, and the same combination returns only after 60 years. The previous Wood Dragon year was 1964.

Dragon years are culturally prominent in many East Asian communities, where the Dragon has positive associations with strength, good fortune, and authority. Zodiac labels are based on traditional calendars and customs; they are not evidence that birth-year animals determine a person's abilities or future.
