Which Chinese stock-market index lost about 8.5% on August 24, 2015, during the “Black Monday” crash?

The story behind the answer

The Shanghai Composite lost about 8.5% on August 24, 2015, during the Chinese stock-market crash often called China’s Black Monday. It was the index’s largest one-day percentage decline since 2007.

The fall came after a sharp rise in Chinese share prices had begun reversing in June 2015. Many individual investors had entered the market using borrowed money, and forced selling amplified declines when prices fell. Concerns about China’s economic growth, government intervention, and the exchange-rate adjustment announced earlier in August added to market anxiety.

The Shanghai Composite tracks shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, including both Chinese companies and other eligible securities. It is not the same as the Hang Seng Index, which tracks the Hong Kong market. Chinese authorities responded with measures including trading restrictions, support for selected purchases, and investigations into market activity.
