Which Chinese representative signed Japan's surrender immediately after Chester Nimitz?
Answer
Hsu Yung-chang
Answer
Hsu Yung-chang
General Hsu Yung-chang signed Japan's surrender for China immediately after Chester Nimitz.
Hsu signed at 9:13 a.m. on September 2, 1945, one minute after Nimitz signed for the United States. He represented the Republic of China, one of the principal Allied powers involved in the war against Japan.
China had been fighting Japan since the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, and the conflict became part of the wider World War II struggle after 1941. Chinese forces continued resisting Japanese occupation while receiving Allied support and coordinating with other powers.
The ceremony's signing order was not a list of every country that had fought Japan. It was a formal sequence for the governments represented aboard Missouri. After Hsu, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser signed for the United Kingdom, followed by representatives of the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
