Which Chinese leader jointly issued the Potsdam Declaration with Truman and Churchill?
Answer
Chiang Kai-shek
Answer
Chiang Kai-shek
Chiang Kai-shek jointly issued the Potsdam Declaration with Truman and Churchill.
On July 26, 1945, U.S. President Harry S. Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek issued the declaration calling for Japan's surrender. The document outlined the consequences of continued resistance and demanded the unconditional surrender of Japanese armed forces.
Chiang was chairman of the Nationalist government of the Republic of China and commander-in-chief of Chinese forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War. China had been fighting Japan since 1937, before the wider European conflict became World War II in 1939.
The Soviet Union did not join the declaration when it was first issued because it was still formally neutral toward Japan. The Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945, after the Hiroshima bombing and shortly before the Nagasaki bombing. Japan eventually accepted the declaration's terms, leading to the August 15 announcement and September 2 signing.
