Which Chinese leader agreed to issue the Potsdam Declaration demanding Japan's surrender?
Answer
Chiang Kai-shek
Answer
Chiang Kai-shek
Chiang Kai-shek agreed to issue the Potsdam Declaration demanding Japan's surrender.
The declaration was released on 26 July 1945 by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. It outlined terms for Japan's surrender and warned that refusal would bring “prompt and utter destruction.” Chiang was president of the National Government of the Republic of China.
Chiang did not attend the Potsdam Conference in person. Chinese agreement was requested by telegram, and he approved the declaration from Chongqing. The final text listed China before Britain in the description of the issuing governments.
The Soviet Union did not initially sign the declaration because it was not yet at war with Japan. After the Soviet Union entered the Pacific war in August, it joined the declaration's position. Japan later accepted its terms, with the Emperor's status becoming a central condition in the surrender process.
