Nanjing hosted the surrender ceremony for Japanese forces in China on 9 September 1945.
The ceremony took place at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing. General Yasuji Okamura signed the surrender document for the Japanese forces, while General He Yingqin accepted it for the Chinese Allies.
The event occurred one week after the main surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It addressed Japanese forces in the China theater and formally ended the Second Sino-Japanese War in China.
The date was deliberately memorable: 9 September 1945 was the ninth day of the ninth month. Japanese forces in China had been ordered to surrender after the broader Japanese decision announced by Hirohito on 15 August and formalized by the Allied signing on 2 September.
