Which children's book by E. B. White features a swan with a trumpet?

The story behind the answer

The children's book by E. B. White that features a swan with a trumpet is The Trumpet of the Swan.

Published in 1970, the novel follows Louis, a trumpeter swan born without a voice. His father obtains a brass trumpet so Louis can communicate and attract Serena, another swan. Louis learns to play, earns money as a bugler and performer, and eventually uses his success to repay the music-store owner for the stolen instrument and a broken window.

E. B. White made Louis part of a broader group of animal-centered children's novels that also includes Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. Those titles are sometimes confused because all three are among White's best-known works, but only The Trumpet of the Swan centers on a musical swan. The character's name is pronounced “LOO-ee,” a reference to trumpeter Louis Armstrong.

The novel is also notable for blending realistic details about trumpeter swans with fantasy. It was adapted into a 2001 animated film and inspired a Philadelphia Orchestra work in 1972.
