Which childhood friend of Harper Lee inspired Dill Harris?

Truman Capote, Harper Lee’s childhood friend, inspired the character of Dill Harris.

Capote and Lee grew up as neighbors in Monroeville, Alabama, and became close friends while they were children. They shared a fascination with books, invented stories, and spent time observing the adults and events around them. Those childhood experiences helped provide material for Lee’s fictional Maycomb.

Dill resembles Capote in several ways: he is imaginative, verbally precocious, and a gifted storyteller. Like Dill, Capote spent part of his childhood in Monroeville while living with relatives. Lee also drew on her own childhood when creating Scout, making the friendship between Scout and Dill partly echo her relationship with Capote.
