Lise Bolkonskaya’s death in childbirth deeply affects Prince Andrei.

Princess Lise, also called Lisa, is Prince Andrei Bolkonsky’s young wife. She is known as the “little princess” and is initially portrayed within the elite social world of Saint Petersburg. While Andrei seeks military glory and later withdraws from society, Lise remains at the Bolkonsky family estate.

After Andrei returns from the campaign, he arrives at Bald Hills during Lise’s labor. She dies giving birth to their son, Nikolai. The scene intensifies Andrei’s alienation and guilt: he has been emotionally distant, yet her death confronts him with the cost of that distance.
