Pete was Disney’s first recurring cartoon villain, debuting in the 1925 Alice comedy Alice Solves the Puzzle.
Pete began as a large, threatening cat in the Alice Comedies, a series combining live action with animation. He later moved into the Mickey Mouse universe and became one of Mickey’s most persistent antagonists. His early design and role changed over time, but the character remained recognizable as a bulky rival who could be villainous, comic, or both.
Pete is often mistakenly described as a character created specifically for Mickey Mouse. In fact, his screen history predates Mickey’s 1928 debut by several years. He is also sometimes confused with later Disney villains who became more famous through feature films, but Pete’s importance lies in his long continuity across Disney shorts, comics, television, and games.
His longevity makes him one of the oldest continuously recurring Disney characters.
