Which character on "The Office" is initially the receptionist?

The story behind the answer

Which character on "The Office" is initially the receptionist? Pam Beesly is the answer. At the beginning of the American sitcom, Pam works as the receptionist at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch, greeting visitors, answering phones, and handling the front desk while Michael Scott manages the office.

Pam is played by Jenna Fischer and begins the series engaged to warehouse worker Roy Anderson. Her position also places her near Jim Halpert, whose friendship and eventual romance with Pam become the show's central storyline. Pam is often dissatisfied with the job and worries that staying a receptionist will limit her future.

Her career changes significantly after she leaves the reception desk to join the Michael Scott Paper Company as a salesperson. She later returns to Dunder Mifflin and becomes the office administrator. Erin Hannon eventually replaces her as receptionist, so Pam is the initial receptionist rather than the only one in the series. The original British version's comparable character is Dawn Tinsley.
