Bard killed the dragon Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Bard was a skilled archer from Lake-town, also called Esgaroth. When Smaug attacked the settlement after leaving the Lonely Mountain, Bard learned from a thrush that the dragon had a vulnerable patch on its underside. He used the Black Arrow to strike that exposed area and bring down Smaug.
The victory made Bard a major leader among the survivors of Lake-town. He later helped rebuild Dale and became its king. The episode is sometimes misremembered as a victory by Thorin Oakenshield or Gandalf, but neither character killed Smaug.
Bard’s success depends on several details: the thrush’s message, the dragon’s hidden weak spot, and the special arrow kept by Bard’s family. In adaptations, the scene is expanded substantially, but Bard remains the character responsible for Smaug’s death.
