Which character is the photographer protagonist of Pokémon Snap?

The story behind the answer

Todd Snap is the photographer protagonist of Pokémon Snap.

In the Nintendo 64 spin-off, Professor Oak sends Todd to Pokémon Island to photograph Pokémon in their natural environments. The player views the island from Todd’s perspective while riding the Zero-One, a motorized vehicle that follows fixed routes through each course.

Todd’s goal is to take photographs that Professor Oak can evaluate. Players can throw apples, use Pester Balls, and play the Poké Flute to attract Pokémon, reveal hidden behavior, or create better photographic opportunities. The game therefore focuses on observation rather than capturing Pokémon for battles.

Todd is distinct from the main anime characters. He is not Ash Ketchum, and he is not the later anime character Tracey Sketchit, although both characters are associated with Pokémon photography. Todd also briefly appears in the anime, connecting the spin-off game with the broader franchise.

Pokémon Snap was notable for presenting Pokémon in real-time 3D environments. Its photography-based design made it one of the franchise’s most unusual early console spin-offs and later inspired New Pokémon Snap for Nintendo Switch.
