Pete is Mickey Mouse’s longtime rival in Disney cartoons.
Pete is a large anthropomorphic cat who has appeared as a bully, criminal, landlord, boss, or general antagonist depending on the story. His role changes, but he is most often placed in opposition to Mickey, Donald Duck, or Goofy.
The character predates Mickey Mouse. Pete first appeared in the 1925 Alice comedy Alice Solves the Puzzle, making him one of Disney’s earliest recurring characters. He was later adapted into the Mickey Mouse series and became its most recognizable recurring villain.
Pete is sometimes confused with other Disney antagonists because his personality and occupation vary widely. He is not the same character as the Big Bad Wolf from the Silly Symphonies or Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective. Pete’s broad design and distinctive growling manner have remained recognizable across many decades.
