Which character gives gifts to the Pevensies in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?
Answer
Father Christmas
Answer
Father Christmas
Father Christmas gives gifts to the Pevensies in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. His appearance is an important sign that the White Witch’s control over Narnia is beginning to weaken.
Before meeting him, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are traveling with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver toward Aslan’s camp. The Witch’s rule has brought a perpetual winter to Narnia, and she has even prevented Christmas from arriving. Father Christmas’s return therefore carries symbolic meaning: hope and the old order are returning.
He gives Peter a sword and shield, Susan a bow, arrows, and a magical horn, and Lucy a dagger and a cordial capable of healing injuries. Edmund receives no gift at this meeting because he is being held by the Witch. The gifts are practical tools, not toys, preparing the children for the struggle ahead.
A common mix-up is identifying Aslan or Mr. Beaver as the gift-giver. Aslan is the leader who guides the resistance, while Mr. Beaver helps the children reach him. In the 2005 film adaptation, Father Christmas is played by James Cosmo.
