Which character does Lisa Edelstein play in House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Lisa Edelstein plays Dr. Lisa Cuddy in House M.D.

Cuddy is the Dean of Medicine and hospital administrator at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. She supervises House and repeatedly tries to balance his diagnostic value against his rule-breaking, dishonesty, and disregard for hospital procedures. Their professional conflict gradually becomes a major personal storyline in the series.

Cuddy is an endocrinologist by training, which is separate from Edelstein’s role as an actor. Edelstein played the character from the pilot through the seventh season, leaving the regular cast before the eighth and final season. Cuddy’s administrative position makes her one of the few people with institutional authority over House, although controlling him is rarely straightforward.

The character is sometimes confused with members of House’s diagnostic team, such as Cameron, Thirteen, and Masters. Cuddy is not one of the fellows who routinely performs differential diagnoses; she is the hospital’s senior medical administrator and House’s boss.
