Ash Ketchum battled Leon to become World Champion in the Pokémon anime.
Their climactic match took place in the World Coronation Series’ Masters Tournament. Leon, the undefeated Champion of the Galar region, served as the final opponent in Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series. Ash’s victory made him the Monarch of the tournament and the anime’s World Champion.
This achievement came after Ash had already won the Alola League, becoming its first Champion. His earlier League appearances often ended before a championship victory, so the Leon battle marked the culmination of his long-running competitive journey.
Leon is different from several other famous Champions. Cynthia represents Sinnoh, Lance represents Kanto and Johto’s Champion tradition, and Gary Oak is Ash’s childhood rival rather than the final opponent in the World Coronation Series.
