Which Chancellor of the Exchequer helped Newton obtain the Warden of the Mint post?

Charles Montagu, Chancellor of the Exchequer, helped Newton obtain the Warden of the Mint post. Montagu, later 1st Earl of Halifax, was Newton’s friend and a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Montagu became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1694 and consulted Newton during the major recoinage crisis. In 1696, he used his influence with the Crown to secure Newton’s appointment as Warden of the Royal Mint. The post was financially comfortable and suited Newton’s growing interest in public affairs and monetary reform.

Newton took the office seriously. He investigated counterfeiters and clipping of coins, and his administrative and investigative work helped make the Mint more effective. In 1699, he advanced to the more lucrative position of Master of the Mint, which he held until his death.

A common mix-up is to associate Newton’s Mint appointment with the later Master of the Mint role. Montagu was the political patron behind the 1696 Warden appointment; Newton’s promotion to Master came three years later.
