Which Central American rainforest frog is famous for its red eyes and blue-striped sides?

The story behind the answer

The red-eyed tree frog is the Central American rainforest frog famous for its red eyes and blue-striped sides.

Agalychnis callidryas occurs from Mexico through Central America, including humid lowland forests. Its vivid appearance combines bright red eyes, a green body, blue or purple flanks marked with pale stripes, and orange toes.

The frog is mainly nocturnal. During the day, it rests on leaves with its eyes closed and limbs tucked against its body, helping conceal the striking colors. When disturbed, it may open its eyes and reveal its vivid markings, a behavior known as startle coloration.

Females lay eggs on leaves overhanging water. After hatching, the tadpoles drop into the water below. The species is often confused with other colorful tree frogs, but its red eyes and striped flanks are especially characteristic.
