Which cemetery first held Marie Curie's remains beside Pierre?

The story behind the answer

Marie Curie’s remains were first placed in Sceaux cemetery beside Pierre Curie’s remains.

Marie died on July 4, 1934, after an illness linked to her long exposure to radiation. She was buried with Pierre in the Curie family tomb at Sceaux, a suburb south of Paris. Pierre had died in 1906 after a traffic accident, decades before Marie’s death.

A common mix-up is the Panthéon. In 1995, sixty years after Marie’s burial, the remains of both Curies were transferred from Sceaux to the Panthéon in Paris. Marie thus became the first woman interred there in recognition of her own achievements.

The transfer also created a memorable scientific detail: because of their historical work with radioactive materials, the remains were placed in lead-lined coffins. Sceaux was therefore the original shared burial place, while the Panthéon is their later and better-known resting place.
