Which cavalry regiment did Churchill join in 1895?

Churchill joined the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in 1895. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in February that year, beginning the military career that took him to Cuba, India and Sudan before he entered politics full-time.

The regiment was a cavalry unit based at Aldershot. Churchill was eager to experience active service, and he used family connections to seek opportunities abroad. Later in 1895, he travelled to Cuba, where he observed the Spanish campaign against Cuban independence fighters and became involved in skirmishes. He also wrote newspaper reports about what he saw.

In 1896, the regiment was posted to India, where Churchill spent about 19 months, largely based in Bangalore. He joined an expedition on India's North-West Frontier and continued writing. The 4th Hussars were later renamed the 4th Queen's Own Hussars and eventually became part of the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars.
