Which cathedral contains the famous Gerhard Richter window installed in 2007?

The story behind the answer

Cologne Cathedral contains the famous Gerhard Richter window installed in 2007.

Richter created the abstract south transept window for Cologne Cathedral using a grid of 11,263 colored squares. The colors were derived from the cathedral’s existing medieval and modern windows, but Richter arranged them according to a controlled system rather than depicting religious figures.

The window was commissioned to replace glass destroyed during the Second World War. Its geometric appearance contrasts sharply with the cathedral’s Gothic architecture and its many narrative windows.

Some visitors call it a mosaic because of its pixel-like appearance, but it is a stained-glass window made from individually colored pieces. Richter’s work is also distinct from the cathedral’s medieval glass because it does not present a conventional biblical scene.
