The 2025 MTV VMAs category carried over from the CMT Music Awards’ Video of the Year was Best Country.
Best Country debuted at the 2025 VMAs after the CMT Music Awards’ Video of the Year category had run from 2002 through 2024. The move followed corporate changes at Paramount, which owns both MTV and CMT, and brought a country-focused fan-voted award into the VMA lineup.
The category is not the same as the VMAs’ general Video of the Year award. It specifically recognizes a country music video, while Video of the Year remains an all-genre top prize. Best Group, Best Pop Artist, and Best Rock are separate VMA categories and did not inherit the CMT award.
Megan Moroney won the inaugural Best Country prize in 2025 for “Am I Okay?” That first presentation helped make the category’s CMT lineage especially clear, even though its name and ceremony changed.
