Which castle in Wales was the birthplace of Henry VII?
Answer
Pembroke Castle
Answer
Pembroke Castle
Henry VII was born at Pembroke Castle in Wales on 28 January 1457. His birth took place during the Wars of the Roses, when rival factions of the royal House of Lancaster and House of York were competing for England's throne.
His father, Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, died about three months before Henry's birth. His mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, was only 13. Through his mother, Henry had a tenuous Lancastrian claim, but his eventual accession depended heavily on political alliances, military victory, and the disappearance or defeat of stronger Yorkist claimants.
Pembroke Castle was in Pembrokeshire, a region sometimes described in the period as “Little England beyond Wales” because of its substantial English-speaking population. The birthplace is sometimes confused with Ludlow Castle, which was an important royal residence and later associated with Henry's son Arthur, Prince of Wales. Henry VII went on to defeat Richard III at Bosworth Field in 1485 and founded the Tudor dynasty.
