Which cast member was the first anchor of Weekend Update?
Answer
Chevy Chase
Answer
Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase was the first anchor of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update.
Chase anchored the segment from its debut in October 1975 through the 1975–76 season and into the beginning of the next season. He presented the news with an intentionally confident, deadpan style, treating absurd headlines as legitimate journalism before puncturing them with a punchline. His opening and closing phrases quickly became part of the show's early identity.
Chase's tenure was brief, but it established the basic structure that later anchors inherited: a single presenter at a news desk, topical jokes, recurring correspondents, and a satirical sign-off. After Chase left the show, Jane Curtin took over the desk, later sharing it with Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. A common mistake is naming Curtin because she became the segment's first long-term replacement, but Chase remains the original anchor and the first person to perform Weekend Update on television.
