Which cast member has been on SNL for over 20 consecutive seasons?

The story behind the answer

Kenan Thompson is the Saturday Night Live cast member who has appeared for more than 20 consecutive seasons. He joined the cast in 2003 and became the show’s longest-tenured cast member.

Before SNL, Thompson was known for Nickelodeon’s sketch series All That and the sitcom Kenan & Kel, where he worked with Kel Mitchell. His experience in fast-paced sketch comedy helped him transition to SNL, although he initially joined as a featured player and was promoted to repertory status in 2005.

Thompson has become one of the show’s most versatile performers, known for impressions, recurring characters, musical sketches, and his ability to support newer cast members. His longevity also reflects a rare continuity in a program whose cast changes frequently.

Darrell Hammond previously held the longevity record with 14 seasons, while Fred Armisen and Seth Meyers each had substantial SNL runs but did not reach Thompson’s total. Thompson also became the first regular SNL cast member born after the show premiered in 1975, since he was born in 1978.
