Which cast member created the character 'Stefon'?
Answer
Bill Hader
Answer
Bill Hader
The SNL cast member who created the character Stefon was Bill Hader. Hader portrayed the eccentric “city correspondent,” known for recommending bizarre New York nightclubs and events during Weekend Update.
Hader created Stefon with writer John Mulaney. The character was inspired by people they encountered in real life, including a club promoter and a Chelsea coffee-shop barista. Stefon first appeared in a November 1, 2008 sketch called “Movie Pitch with Stefon,” before moving to Weekend Update and becoming one of Hader’s signature roles.
Mulaney wrote many of Stefon’s lines, while Hader shaped the character’s voice, mannerisms, and performance. Mulaney was also famous for changing lines on cue cards before the live broadcast, deliberately trying to make Hader laugh. Stefon regularly appeared from 2010 through 2013, with later guest appearances after Hader left SNL.
